The learning beaches
One Mile Beach is the classic beginner spot: a sheltered sandy bay with a forgiving inside bank and a car park right behind it. Birubi, at the Stockton dunes end, is more open and picks up more swell, which makes it the better choice for improvers. Fingal Bay is the most protected of the three and often the fallback when a southerly is blowing.
Because the school here teaches at all three, your lesson goes ahead in the best of the day's conditions rather than being cancelled because one beach is messy.
Kids and school programs
Port Stephens has a strong local kids' scene. The Shredders and Frothers term programs run weekly through the school terms at A$80 a class, building the same group of kids through the season rather than one-off lessons. School holiday programs run at A$90, and there are private lessons from A$190 for anyone who wants concentrated coaching.
For visiting families, holiday programs and group lessons are the easy option; for locals, the term programs are much better value across a season.
Costs and seasons
A group lesson is A$90 for 90 minutes with board and wetsuit included. Beach yoga is A$30, and day retreats — surf, yoga and food — sit around A$255. Summer (December to February) is warm and busy; autumn brings the cleanest waves of the year with fewer people. Winter surfing here is entirely comfortable in a spring suit or 3/2.
