Surf school software alternatives, compared

Choosing booking software for a surf school usually means comparing a watersports specialist, a generic tour platform and the spreadsheet you already have. This page puts the platforms surf schools ask us about most in one table, with their pricing model, commitment and who they are built for, and links to our detailed comparison of each one.

One of the best-known tour and activity booking systems. It is general-purpose rather than surf-specific, so beach choice, surf conditions and instructor matching stay with you.

MaiKupo

Also goes after the seasonal problem by charging only when a booking completes. The commission comes out of the operator's booking; the differences with SurfSlot are surf-specific operations and who pays the fee.

Spreadsheets & WhatsApp

Free and flexible, and where most schools begin. The cost is the hours: manual bookings, chasing deposits, messaging instructors and re-checking forecasts every morning.

Five things to compare before you switch

Feature lists all look alike after a while. These are the questions that separate one platform from another for a surf school in particular.

  • What it costs in your quiet months

Work out the full-year cost, not the headline monthly price. A minimum term or annual billing matters more to a seasonal school than the rate.

  • Who pays the fee, and where it shows

A commission comes out of your lesson price. A subscription is invisible to customers. A customer-paid booking fee shows up in the customer's total.

  • Whether it understands surf

Generic tour systems sell a time slot. A surf school also needs the right beach for the day's conditions, the right instructor for the level, and a way to move everyone at once.

  • What happens after the booking

Waivers for every participant, deposits and balances, equipment held against the lesson, and messages to instructors when anything changes.

  • How easily you can leave

Ask in writing how you export customers, bookings and signed waivers, and whether there is a notice period.

Where SurfSlot fits, and where it doesn't

SurfSlot is surf school software built around the work that happens after a booking. Surf conditions are checked every two hours against the ideal conditions you set for each beach, lessons at risk are flagged up to four days ahead, instructors are matched on skills and availability and told by SMS, and every participant gets their own waiver link. There is no subscription, no setup fee and no lock-in, so a quiet winter costs you nothing.

It is not the right fit for everyone. If you mainly sell through tour marketplaces and want one system for many unrelated activities, a general tour platform may suit you better. If you want a fixed, predictable software cost and your customers are very price-sensitive at checkout, a subscription may be easier to explain than a booking fee. And if you only take a handful of bookings a month, a spreadsheet can genuinely be enough for now.

Frequently asked

What is the best surf school software?

The one that removes the work you actually do every day. If your time goes on taking bookings and payments, most booking platforms will help. If it goes on checking forecasts, moving lessons between beaches, matching instructors and chasing waivers, look for software built around surf operations rather than a generic tour calendar.

Are these comparisons written by SurfSlot?

Yes, so read them with that in mind. We try to be fair: each post says where the other platform is strong, competitor prices are only quoted when we have read them on the vendor's own pricing page, and the date we checked is stated.

Which pricing model is cheapest for a seasonal surf school?

It depends on your volume and how long your quiet season is. Subscriptions cost the same in January as in August, commission grows with every booking, and a customer-paid booking fee costs the school nothing in a quiet month. Our pricing page compares the models side by side.

How hard is it to switch booking software?

The usual steps are exporting your customer list, recreating products, beaches and instructors, and swapping the booking widget on your website. The quietest part of the year is the best time. SurfSlot's team can do the setup for you during onboarding.

Can SurfSlot sync bookings from another platform while we switch?

Bookings from FareHarbor, Checkfront and iCal calendar feeds can sync into SurfSlot, which helps if you keep selling through another channel for a while.
