Booking & Software

Looking for a Bloowatch Alternative? Read This First

Bloowatch is a genuinely good piece of software, and if you are searching for an alternative it is worth being clear about why. It is not because Bloowatch is missing the surf basics — it has tide-aware scheduling, instructor planning, a beach POS and digital waivers, and it does not take commission on your bookings. Most "alternative" pages you will read pretend otherwise. This one will not. The real question is whether its cost structure fits the way your season actually runs.

What Bloowatch Actually Does Well

Credit where it is due. Bloowatch is built for watersports centres rather than adapted from generic tourism software, and it shows:

- **Tide-based auto-scheduling** — it can generate session times inside your tide windows, which is the single most surf-specific feature any booking tool can have. - **Weekly base plans rolled across a season** — build the pattern once, adjust individual days in seconds. - **Beach POS for walk-ups**, including shop items, with a daily close and accounting-ready exports. - **Agent, reseller and OTA connectivity** — GetYourGuide, Viator, Manawa, Expedia, Google Things to Do — with agent invoicing so you are not reconciling commissions by hand. - **0% commission from Bloowatch** on your bookings.

If you are a large, year-round centre with a significant agent and OTA channel, that last point about OTA reconciliation is worth real money, and it is a legitimate reason to stay.

So Why Do Schools Look for an Alternative?

Almost always, it comes down to one line on the pricing page: **all Bloowatch plans include a 12-month commitment.**

That is a normal SaaS term and there is nothing sinister about it. But surf schools are not normal SaaS customers. A school in Portugal, France or Morocco might do serious volume for five months and almost nothing for four. A 12-month subscription means you pay through the quiet months at the same rate as August.

Work it through on your own numbers. Take your monthly subscription cost, multiply by twelve, and divide by the number of months you actually trade. That is your true cost per trading month. For a lot of seasonal schools it is nearly double the headline figure, and that is the number worth comparing against anything else.

The second reason is scale. A fixed subscription is regressive for a small school: a two-instructor operation and a fifteen-instructor centre pay according to plan tier, not according to how much the software actually earned them.

How SurfSlot's Model Differs

SurfSlot inverts the cost structure. There is no subscription and no commitment. A 10% platform fee is added to the customer's total at checkout, so you keep 100% of your listed price and pay nothing in a month with no bookings.

On a €60 lesson: you list €60, you receive €60, the customer pays €66.

**Be honest with yourself about the trade-off.** That fee is visible to your customer. If a surfer is comparing your checkout page against the school down the beach who is on a subscription model and shows €60 flat, your page shows €66. For most schools this is a non-issue — people book on reviews, location and availability, not a €6 delta — but if you compete purely on price in a crowded market, it is a real consideration and you should price with it in mind.

What you get in exchange is zero fixed cost and zero lock-in. In February, SurfSlot costs you nothing. There is no twelve-month tail to pay off if you decide it is not for you.

Cost Structures Side by Side

| | SurfSlot | Bloowatch | |---|---|---| | Commission on your bookings | 0% | 0% | | Monthly subscription | None | Tiered by centre size | | Minimum commitment | None | 12 months | | Cost in a month with no bookings | €0 | Full subscription | | Who pays the platform | Customer (+10% at checkout) | The school | | Price the customer sees | Your price + 10% | Your price |

Neither column is universally better. A high-volume, year-round centre may well pay less overall on a fixed subscription. A five-month seasonal school almost certainly pays less on a usage-based model. Run your own numbers rather than trusting either vendor's framing, including ours.

Where the Products Genuinely Differ

Both platforms cover bookings, scheduling, waivers and payments. The differences worth knowing about:

**Bloowatch leans towards multichannel sales.** Its strongest suit is selling through many channels at once — website, phone, walk-up POS, agents and OTAs — with availability and reporting staying aligned. If a third of your business comes through Viator and agents, that is built for you.

**SurfSlot leans towards operational automation.** Conditions are monitored continuously with danger alerts flagged days ahead, instructors are auto-assigned against skills and availability, waivers are sent without you touching them, and deposit balances are chased automatically. It is designed to remove the two or three hours a day that a small school owner spends on admin.

One is a stronger sales engine. The other is a stronger operations engine. Which matters more depends on whether your bottleneck is demand or your own time.

Other Alternatives Worth Considering

For completeness, since you are shopping:

- **EquipDash** — surf-specific with tide-window scheduling and AI scheduling assistance. Plans start around $29/month **plus a 1–2% booking fee**, so it is not commission-free. - **FareHarbor, Rezdy, Peek Pro** — large tour-and-activity platforms with commission-based models, strong OTA distribution, and no real understanding of tides or instructor ratios. - **Checkfront** — solid generic booking software, nothing surf-specific. - **Spreadsheets and WhatsApp** — genuinely fine up to a point, and that point is usually the first double-booked Saturday in July.

The Honest Recommendation

If you are a large year-round centre with a heavy agent and OTA mix, Bloowatch is a strong fit and the 12-month term is unlikely to bother you.

If you are a seasonal school, or a small one, or you have been burned by paying for software through a dead winter, a model with no fixed cost and no commitment is worth a serious look. Do the arithmetic on your own trading months first.
