Best Surf Schools Near Lagos

Lagos is where most people base themselves in the western Algarve — the town, the nightlife, the beaches and the cheapest flights are all here. The surf, though, mostly happens a short drive west. Meia Praia picks up occasional swell, but the reliable waves are around Sagres and Vila do Bispo, roughly 30–40 minutes down the road, which is where the schools listed here teach.

Good Feeling has been teaching in the Sagres area since 1997 and is certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation. Lessons run all year round in small groups — a maximum of eight students per coach — with the beach chosen each morning to suit the swell and the level of the group. Alongside surfing they run stand-up paddle tours and coasteering along the Vila do Bispo coastline, which makes them a good pick for mixed-ability groups and families who want more than one activity in a week.

Surf & stay

Freeride has been running in Sagres since 2002, from a surf centre open all year in town and a summer beach hut at Praia do Cordoama on the west coast. As well as beginner group lessons they do intermediate coaching, private guiding for surfers who already know what they are doing, kids lessons and surf-and-stay packages. Having both a town base and a beach base means they can move between the sheltered south coast and the bigger west coast swell depending on the day.

Surfing from a Lagos base

Meia Praia, the long beach east of town, works on a big south swell and is otherwise flat — pleasant for a paddle, not dependable for a lesson. Porto de Mós and Luz get the occasional wave. For consistency, everyone drives west.

That drive is normal here, not a compromise: schools around Sagres check the forecast each morning and pick the best beach across two coastlines. If you are staying in Lagos, budget 35–45 minutes each way, or book a full-day session so the travel is worth it.

What to book

If you are new, a three-hour group lesson (€60–€85) is the right starting point and includes board, wetsuit and insurance. If you already surf, look for intermediate coaching or a guided session — a coach who knows which sandbar is working beats a lesson you do not need.

For a single day trip from Lagos, a full-day west coast explore is the best use of your time: you get more water time and see beaches you would not find alone.

Beyond surfing

The coastline between Lagos and Sagres is one of the best stretches in Europe for coasteering and stand-up paddle — cliffs, sea caves and clear water. On flat days these are a genuinely better use of a morning than a whitewash lesson, and both are bookable from the schools below.

Lagos surf lessons — common questions

Can you surf in Lagos itself?

Occasionally. Meia Praia and Porto de Mós need a decent south swell to break. For dependable waves, schools run lessons on the west coast beaches 30–45 minutes away.

Is Lagos a good base for a surf trip?

Yes, if you want a town with restaurants, transport links and accommodation. Just expect a short drive to the surf. If you would rather roll out of bed onto the beach, base yourself in Sagres instead.

How far in advance should I book a lesson?

In July and August, several days ahead — group spots fill. Outside peak season a day or two is usually enough, and both schools here take instant online bookings.
