Best Surf Schools in the Algarve
The Algarve is two very different surf coasts joined at Cape St Vincent. The west coast, from Amado down to Beliche, takes the full Atlantic swell. The south coast, running east through Lagos and Portimão, sits in the lee of the cape and stays far smaller. Schools based near the corner use both, which is why the western Algarve is the strongest part of the region for lessons.

Good Feeling has been teaching in the Sagres area since 1997 and is certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation. Lessons run all year round in small groups — a maximum of eight students per coach — with the beach chosen each morning to suit the swell and the level of the group. Freeride Surf School
Sagres & Praia do Cordoama, Portugal
Freeride has been running in Sagres since 2002, from a surf centre open all year in town and a summer beach hut at Praia do Cordoama on the west coast. As well as beginner group lessons they do intermediate coaching, private guiding for surfers who already know what they are doing, kids lessons and surf-and-stay packages. Having both a town base and a beach base means they can move between the sheltered south coast and the bigger west coast swell depending on the day.

West coast or south coast?
The west coast — Cordoama, Castelejo, Amado, Bordeira — is exposed, powerful and beautiful, with fewer people and stronger currents. It suits improvers and anyone who wants real waves rather than whitewash.
The south coast is the beginner side: Martinhal, Mareta, Meia Praia in Lagos and the town beaches further east. Smaller surf, warmer water, easier paddling. A good school will choose between the two for you each morning rather than committing to one beach.
What you will pay
Group lessons across the Algarve sit around €55–€85 for a half day with all gear included. Private tuition runs €110–€300. Full-day surf explores, where a coach drives you to whichever beach is working, cost around €350 and are the best value if you only have one day and want to actually surf good waves.

Seasons
May to October is the classic learning season: warm, consistent and busy. July and August are the most crowded and the most expensive for accommodation, though lesson prices barely move. October and November are the sweet spot — swell returns, the crowds go home and the water is still around 19°C. Winter is for surfers who want size, with sheltered fallback beaches always within a short drive.
